I have read through the bug report. I am getting different symptoms. When I use a gtk theme which has light background and dark text I have no problems. I can also see the text when using a dark gtk theme by highliting it. This looks like a Lotus Notes bug to me, which may well be related to the bug report you pointed to.

What makes this more irritating is that if I change to a light background theme, start Lotus Notes, then revert to my dark theme LN appears to work perfectly, with a light background in text boxes. But LN won't honor the GTK2_RC_FILES to pick up its own gtk theme.
